Stile Antico Biography
Stile Antico is an ensemble of youth British singers, fast gaining recognition as one of the most original and exciting new voices in its field. In 2005 the group won the inaugural Audience Prize at the Early Music Network International Young Artists' Competition, leading to a series of high-profile concert engagements, and attracting the attention of Harmonia Mundi. Their first recording for the label, Music for Compline, has met with immediate success, receiving the prestigious Diapason d'Or and Choc du Monde de la Musique awards. In November 2007 the group was extremely proud to be awarded the Diapason d'Or de l'Année.
Working without a conductor, the members of the Stile Antico rehearse and perform as chamber musicians, each contributing artistically to the musical result. Their repertoire ranges from the glorious legacy of the English Tudor composers to the works of the Flemish and Spanish schools and the music of the early Baroque. They are passionate about the need to communicate with their audiences, combining thoughtful programming with direct, expressive performances. They are also committed to developing their educational work, for which they have received generous funding from the National Lottery through Art Council in England.
Stile Antico has appeared throughout the UK, including at the City of London, Lake District Summer Music and Beverley and East Riding Festivals, and the Cambridge Early Music Summer Schools series. In Autumn 2006 they collaborated extensively with Sting in his project Songs from Labyrinth, performing lute songs by John Dowland. Highlights for 2007 included a residency at Darlington International Summer School, a recital with the Rose Consort at the York Early Music Festival, and a three-week European tour with Sting. In 2008 Stile Antico will perform at many venues and festivals across the UK, France and Belgium.
