Terrible, unspeakable things happened to Sethe at Sweet Home, the farm where she lived as a slave for many years until she escaped to Ohio. Her new life is full of hope but eighteen years later she is still not free. Sethe's new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved.

"A magnificent achievement...an American masterpiece" -- A.S. Byatt Guardian "A triumph" -- Margaret Atwood New York Times Book Review "She melds horror and beauty in a story that will disturb the mind forever" Sunday Times "Toni Morrison is not just an important contemporary novelist but a major figure in our national literature" New York Review of Books "A work of genuine force...Beautifully written" Washington Post The most profound exploration of slavery and its devastating effects upon both the enslaved and the slave owners that I have ever come across. On a personal level I was moved by turns to grief & rage at man's inhumanity to man, & to astonished admiration of the human ability to endure. As a teacher I felt incredibly prvileged to share Sethe's story with young people who previously had had no real concept of slavery: to watch them as their understanding of the institution of slavery dawned, then became clear, to share their outrage, their passion and horror of what one man's enslavement of another really means gave me hope and faith that all their lives they would actively and utterly reject slavery. Morrison's real genius, I think, was in never telling the reader how they MUST think about slavery, yet leaving them in no doubt that it is a state to be rejected on every level. The highest compliment I can give to any book is to say that it lives with me, every action and reaction of my relationships with others, my politics, my heart and my mind have been in some way influenced by 'Beloved.' - Chrissie Hardman Write a review
