In "Nineteen eighty-four", one of the 20th century's great myth-makers takes a cold look at the future. Orwell's study of individual struggling - or not struggling - against totalitarianism remains a salutary lesson in any society.
Strange and fascinating how books are connected!
The hero of the book No More Lies! has strongly recommended this book together with Lord of the Flies by William Golding.
He was talking about some kind of a social revolution which I couldnt figure out. Well, not until I read all three books.
The fiction in Lord of the flies by Golding is connected to this book by contrast, however. There was the anarchy as a theme against Orwells 1984 which describe totalitarianism, or totalitarian dictatorship. The three books are terrifically interwoven in a bizarre haze which sways between fiction and reality.
According to the hero of No More lies!, Orwells social dictatorship in 1984 is equally devastating for the individual as the anarchy in Lord of the Flies, because they are both annihilators of the individuals freedom.
In No more Lies! the hero compares and contrasts reality of todays Denmark with both the above fiction books. I found it extremely interesting to read that both the anarchy of Lord of the flies and the social dictatorship of the big brother in 1984 exists in some societies today.
For me it was a terrific discovery. I just couldnt believe that a society like 1984 does really exist today, in Europe.
Take for an instance freedom of speech just as in 1984 this freedom has been violated. The hero of No More Lies! witnesses that just to speak, not even loud, in a local train can cause one big troubles, not to mention if one would dare to speak a different language. This book is happening! People live in a Totalitarian Fear just like in 1984.
I remember the heated discussions in high school many years ago, even though I did not read the book to the end at the time, the teacher spoke about the future as if such a society had never existed before, but warned us that if we dont or wont care it might happen in reality.
The teacher claimed that Orwell might have been just critical towards English society. Today I think he was doing more than that. In my view his book is a classic warning for the entire world.
For Orwell 1984 was seemingly the far future. For us, we want to believe it has only happened in the past. However, Orwell was not wrong! His warning in this book is reality in more than one country today. In our days! Its simply unthinkable. It made me think about the witch hunts in America and Europe not so many years ago, or even about the inquisition in England and Spain. But is it really over? Was it really just a book of fiction? Are we living in a safe world? This book made me wonder.
It drew me back to the book No More Lies! where it has been compared with violations of freedom of thought, freedom of speech, freedom of movement, and freedom of thought. I am stunned!
The fear control in Denmark where Society silences everyone who dares to think differently than the mainstream is exactly the description of the social dictatorship through the allegory of the Big Brother in 1984. In both -
Mark LavreeWhat struck me most when reading '1984' was how simplicity of the language and structure. It just makes it so easy to read! Coupled with its eerily accurate portrait of the future, this book simply cannot be put down! -
