for SATB unaccompanied As Joseph was a-walking is a beautifully serene and atmospheric setting of traditional words on the prophecy of Christ's birth as told to Joseph by an angel. With rich harmonies, striking chromatic moments, and appealing contours, this is an ideal carol for more able choirs.

Francis Potts' finely crafted setting of the traditional words 'As Joseph was a-walking' has a neo-medieval flavour. Each vocal line has independent melodic shape; dissonance and chromaticism are deftly employed to exquisitely expressive ends. This is a splendid piece, within the capabilities of many parish choirs and strongly recommended to cathedral choirs. Church Music Quarterly, December 2011 Francis Pott's As Joseph was a-walking has a lovely fluidity; it is richly crafted with modal harmonies and tasteful suspensions. Rupert Gough, Choir & Organ November 2011 Pott's setting, in a rather oblique, modal harmony, captures an almost dreamlike quality, as the angel's prophecy of Christ's imminent birth envelopes its recipient.
