Beethoven's Choral Symphony is well served on disc. What makes Furtwangler's account stand out is its depth of emotion and power of expression. Recorded live at the first opening of the Bayreuth Festspielhaus since the Second World War the listener is at once aware of the moving atmosphere of this historic occasion; it is no coincidence that the 'Ode to Joy' from the final movement has since come to symbolise European Unity. The playing is of the first order and the singing, especially of the solo quartet, is as good as one could hope to find. Be the first to write a customer review
