This is the story of two women, one born in 1941 in America and the other in 1825 in England, and a book. Marissa and Catherine, two lives running in parallel, are brought together in the present by a book. Caroline and Capt. Smith, great friends and helpmates of Catherine, and Fredrika Bremer, world famous author from Sweden, are introduced, and finally, Edgar Allan Poe, publisher, poet, friend, and Catherineas secret lover in America. Marissa finds Jeff and the happiness she seeks. Ultimately a sinister plot unfolds, snatching Jeff from Marissa not once but twice. She must discover the secret to bring him back, while she excises Stephen from her mind. Catherine, cast off and deserted, struggles with emotions when Daniel finds her and more than he had bargained for. And through it all, the book, a legacy from Catherine to her descendants down through time to Marissa for her salvation.
