Designed for use on core introductory computer courses at the undergraduate level, this book looks at the field of information systems and emulates its progress. In this third edition the authors stress the importance of information systems, and include chapters which offer expanded coverage of systems development and discussion of decision support systems and expert systems. Two chapters encompass communications and networking. Other features of the book include coverage of both technology and applications with progressive discussions on multimedia, object-oriented programming, prototyping, virtual reality, functional electronic simulation, notebooks, smart cards, hypertext and emerging platforms. Video photo essays provide illustrations with discussions which cover areas such as computer graphics, how chips are made, how to buy a PC, the history of computers, Windows, and computers at the movies. Lists of important terms are provided, along with learning objectives, chapter outlines, review exercises and problem solving exercises.
