  Synopsis Details Reviews
Eight-year-old Daisy Turner lives on a farm in Grafton, Vermont, with her twelve brothers and sisters. One day she is told that for her school play, the pupils will recite poems about different cultures. The girls are each given a doll to carry and a poem to memorize. To Daisy's surprise, the doll she receives has a coal-black face. While the other girls giggle, Daisy runs home in tears. For the first time in her life she realizes that, like her doll, her own color is different from that of her classmates. On the evening of the program, Daisy finds that she can't bring herself to recite the words her teacher has written. Her assertion of individualism proves to be an irresistible testament to the power of poetry and to the courage of a real child who dared to speak the truth. Told in Daisy's voice, the books' themes of identity and self-affirmation offer a powerful lesson to today's youngsters who face similar situations of prejudice and stereotyping in 21st century classroom. Daisy and the Doll was named an Aesop Accolade Book (American Folklore Society), a Yankee magazine Top 100 Classic New England Children's Book, and a Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People.
