Sally Downing contributes to the war effort by flying Spitfires from the factory to the airfields. When she is attacked by a Messerschmitt, she is mortified at the idea of losing the plane, as much as she is terrified of losing her life - but at the last minute an RAF Hurricane swoops from the clouds to rescue her.
The hero is Vaclav Capkova, a Czech pilot based in Britain. They become close, but at the end of the war he returns to his homeland and the fiancee he left behind. However, things have changed and Vaclav can't forget Sally, who finds herself feeling the same. Unhappy with the Communist regime, Vaclav plans to steal a plane, and escapes to meet up with his old love.
