The summer holidays are dragging on and Harry Potter can't wait for the start of the school year. It is his fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and there are spells to be learnt and (unluckily) Potions and Divination lessons to be attended. But Harry can't know that the atmosphere is darkening around him, and his worst enemy is preparing a fate that it seems will be inescapable ...With characteristic wit, fast-paced humour and marvellous emotional depth, J.K. Rowling has proved herself yet again to be a master story-teller.

I love Harry Potter and thought I could never get enough of Rowling's twists, turns and fantasy. But with this book it just went on slightly too far. I love picking my way through all the Biblical and mythological references, seeing what I can trace to whcih heritage whil ebeing swept along by the sheer energy of the text and the humour of the writing. But in this case I thought it was in danger of going on a little too far. She seems to have recovered with subsequent books, but I felt that this could have been a quarter shorter despite being drunk on her usual brilliance. - Nick Donman Write a review
