Relationship breakdown is increasing as evidenced in statistics of around 150,000 couples divorcing each year, and this does not even take into account the breakup of cohabiting couples. This survey looks at the impact of changing patterns of family life on social and housing policy, with special emphasis on local authority housing. Tenure, violence, the presence of children and marital status are inter-related key factors influencing housing consequences. All policy makers, local authorities, housing associations and agencies should consider the findings.
