2003. Invalided out of the SAS Chet Freeman makes his living in high-end security, on a temporary contract for an American corporation called the Grosvenor Group. He catches a young woman, a peace campaigner, eavesdropping on a meeting the Group is holding with the British Prime Minister. The Group's interests include arms manufacture, and what Chet and the young woman overhear seems to imply that it is bribing the Prime Minister to take his country into an illegal war. Could this possibly be true?Somebody believes that this is a secret that needs covering up, because Chet and the girl are attacked. Hunted down, they go into hiding, and a deadly game of cat and mouse begins.Nearly ten years later tension is reaching breaking point in Jerusalem. The now ex-Prime Minister is working as a Middle East peace envoy. As the city descends into anarchy and rival armies are poised to turn it into a battlefield, Chet's best buddy, Luke, is part of a team tasked by the Regiment with extracting the ex-Prime Minister. At the height of the battle Luke discovers a conspiracy far more devastating than any arms deal.

Nobody takes you to the action better than Ryan, because he's the real deal, and this muscle-and-bone thriller will have fans' blood pumping -- Evening Standard Chris Ryan is as hard as nails -- Mirror 'The books are masterpieces of social realism. [Chris Ryan] has lived the virtual life he writes about - and that makes him the right kind of war novelist for this generation. These storylines are dependent on a bustle of verbs that lead in every instance to blood and explosions, desperate screams and increasing levels of difficulty: it is never long before we find things and people being zapped, fried, crunched, toasted and skewered, as the bad deeds of the world are comprehensively avenged' -- London Review of Books 'Former SAS soldier Ryan needs little introduction ... This 15th Ryan thriller bears all his hallmarks, with bone-crunching action, a hero with nothing to lose and a heroine who used to work for the famed 14 Intelligence Company in Ulster ... There's barely a moment for the reader to draw breath as it races to a denoument that Frederick Forsyth would be proud of ... Ryan has come of age as a writer - his Boys' Own bravado is now tempered with sharp political insight and a neat line in treachery. Catch him now.' -- Daily Mail 'A Classic of the genre' -- FHM 'A no-holds-barred action thriller that smacks of authenticity ... as an ex-SAS soldier, Ryan knows the bloody details of these dog-eat-dog worlds and he scores another hit here' -- News of the World Chris Ryan has always been underrated as a novelist of ideas -- Daily Telegraph When a book says Chris Ryan on the front, there's little doubt as to what's in store... expect lots of Afghan action but also intelligent, political thrills -- Mail on Sunday - Live Be the first to write a customer review
