Gascoyne and his wife, Nancy, a romantic novelist, separate when she discovers he has been unfaithful and is rewriting her latest novel.Nancy works as a part-time receptionist for a doctor's surgery, where the arrival of new locum, Monclar, arouses her interest. Meanwhile, Gascoyne unsuccessfully struggles to hold down his high pressure job as a lawyer and soon turns to alcohol. Then he is sacked and with his own unfinished novel to complete, he takes a job as a night porter at a hotel to conduct research.Now, when a murderer strikes, both Gascoyne and Nancy are drawn into sinister events.
