Louis Dumont and Hierarchical Opposition

Louis Dumont (1911-1988) was one of the most gifted anthropologists and social scientists of his generation. His work is most significant for containing several important advances on Claude Levi-Strauss's model of binary oppositions. This text not only introduces his theories, and the work he did on India and modern individualism, but discusses his impact on the academic community and his place within the discipline of anthropology as a whole. By the end, we are shown the value of his original insights, and also the continuing relevance of a structuralist approach, developed far beyond the limitations it had when associated exclusively with Levi-Strauss.
