This book was a revelation to me as a young girl in my late teens struggling to be both good and productive in the world. George Eliot captures just such a struggle with her protagonist Dorothea. From the moment the book starts until its end I was totally captivated at times admiring Dorothea, at times infuriated and dispairing of her, but always, always fully-engaged in her struggle. As she learns, we learn. This is a beautiful book on a grand scale. - Kate Charlton-JonesThere is a breadth and completeness about this novel that exceeds anything written before or since. The characterizations are splendid and so is the overall characterization of the town. It abounds with discerning comments on almost every aspect of provincial English life in its time. - Brian McLean Write a review
