Weak market cities across European and the US, or ácore cities' as they were in their heyday, went from being industrial giants dominating their national-and, eventually, the global-economy to being devastation zones. In a single generation three quarters of all manufacturing jobs disappeared, leaving dislocated, impoverished communities, run-down city centres and a massive population exodus. How did Europe react…
Industrial cities in Europe and the US have been through periods of intense growth, innovation and wealth production, leading to great social and economic transformations at the expense of their environments and social stability. During the 1970s, some 'weak market cities' experienced urban industrial collapse as industry moved away when social and economic costs become too high. Recovery and regeneration of some European cities has been highly successful through public interventions whilst the American 'Rust Belt' cities recovered more slowly and with minimal government support. This book explores what can be learnt from the economic, social and environmental transformations of these weak market cities. This is now more significant than ever as these recovering cities are threatened by recent global economic turmoil, resource constraints and climate change. The authors discuss the lessons learnt from the European and American cities' experiences and outline practical interventions to support renewal in challenging circumstances, which will be of great value to all those interested in urban change and renewal.
