Lipid disorders play a major part in the onset and progression of cardiovascular disease, particularly the dyslipoproteinemias, with lipoproteins now recognised as key agents in the development of atherosclerosis. In this exciting new volume, the authors highlight the clinical importance of these disorders, drawing upon a rich collection of visual material to illustrate the mechanisms of disease. In so doing, they show how asymptomatic morbidity eventually leads to potentially life-threatening manifestations such as angina, myocardial infarction, TIA, stroke, gangrene and renovascular hypertension. In addition, they illustrate how lipid disorders may manifest by disorders in other organ systems, and present initially to specialists in fields as diverse as rheumatology, dermatology, orthopaedics or ophthalmology, with a further risk of misdiagnosis. It is for this reason that clinicians must constantly be searching for clues to the presence of disease. Detecting imbalances in certain plasma lipoproteins that suggest an underlying abnormality may be key to making an early diagnosis and in this atlas, the authors show how this knowledge may be applied in the clinical setting. As a visual guide to diagnosis, the "Atlas of Lipid Disorders" will assist cardiologists, endocrinologists, primary care physicians and other healthcare professionals in their daily task of making an accurate assessment of the patient and thereafter formulating the most effective programme of management for each manifestation of this highly complex group of disorders.
