This work seeks to trace the common and changing uses of punctuation for dramatic purposes in Elizabethan England by examining the practice of particular playwrights. After preliminary chapters on the development of punctuation in the Renaissance and Elizabethan grammars, printing, and manuscripts and quarto plays, individual plays are discussed: the anonymous Gammer Gurton's Needle, Shakespeare's Richard II, John Marston's Parasitaster and The Malcontent, and Jonson's Volpone.
