Drawing on detailed ethnographic material, Denney presents a challenging analysis of the complex processes by which black people are treated differentially by probation services, and offers suggestions for improved probation practice.
Probation officers hold a pivotal position within the criminal justice system, exercising power in a peculiarly subjective manner, through judgements often given verbally to the courts, and in written social enquiry reports. Statements made in records may also affect the way in which other probation officers perceive offenders. The underlying assumptions and perceptions of probation officers in relation to 'race' are crucial in understanding the nature of the service offered to black offenders. Racism and Anti-Racism in Probation analyses the complex processes through which black people are differentially treated by the probation service. In it, David Denney argues that little systematic attention has been given to the nature of the relationship between the probation officers' perceptions of offending' probation practice and the complex meanings which underlie probation intervention with black and white offenders. Drawing on ethnographic material as well as his own past experience as a probation officer Denney also considers the implications of recent changes in penal policy on the development of probation work with black people. As the issue of racial discrimination gets ever more pressing, Racism and Anti-Racism in Probation offers an analysis of anti-racist training and discusses future developments in practice in the light of recent government thinking.
