A lecture presented to OPM's Public Interest General Council in June 2004 Professor Peter Hennessy presented his latest personal overview of the current and possible future political environment to OPM's Public Interest General Council in June 2004. He is well known for his critical commentaries on the workings of government and this is the second time he has presented his views to OPM: in 1998 The Blair Centre: a question of command and control? was published. Whether one agrees with Peter's analyses or not, his political overviews and speculation challenge our thinking about the future and its implications for public services. It is hoped this paper will stimulate more thinking in local service management as we approach the next general election.
