"Surely the best novel Terry Pratchett has ever written, and the best comedy"-John Clute, "Interzone"
A typical Pratchett insight into the immorality of a too moral society that has lost its path.
Wandering the desert with his god - currently a tortoise - and becoming more godly, and funnily enough more worldly.
All the usual historical figures and inventions crop up in fun-packed scenarios.
As per usual with Pratchett, the more you read and learn of the world the more farce you find in the characters and situations - in this one its primarily the Greek philosophers that feature.
Fun and thought provoking - a great combination! -
Nicola MilliganTerry Pratchett is often unfairly looked down upon in literary circles and to be fair he has written some tosh in his time. However, on the whole his brand of wit, wisdom and (most importantly) his insightfulness create books that are not only a pleasure to read but speak volumes about our world, even when he is writing about a fantasy world that floats through the void on the back of a giant turtle. Nowhere does this become more apparent than in his best work, Small Gods. On the face of it it seems to be a book attacking the church but it is much more than that. It asks us fundamental questions about the nature of organised religion and what, in the end, we truely believe in. Oh, and it's very funny too! -
