Thrown in prison for a crime he has not committed, Edmond Dantes is confined to the grim fortress of If. There he learns of a great hoard of treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo and becomes determined not only to escape but to unearth the treasure and use it to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration. A huge popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s, Dumas was inspired by a real-life case of wrongful imprisonment when writing his epic tale of suffering and retribution.

On a surface level this in an incredible book, which allows the reader to develop close sympathy with the characters. The reader is also whirld along through numerous plot twists making it an incredible reading expereince. On a closer scrutiny this is an incredible exploration of human nature and emotions with the plot twists and turns representative of the way we twist and turn through life. Through his portrayal of Dantes expereinces Dumas considers the effects of despair and the need for revenge, showing how, through the bonds formed between the characters feelings of love can overcome these. Feelings of love and hope seem to be closely wound together, almost giving the impression that Dumas is attempting a modern retelling of the myth of Pandora's box. Its an experience not to be missed! - Sarah Knight Write a review
