Professor Harry Butler is obsessed with the mind/body problem. Unfortunately, this is not the least of his problems. His wife has turned his study into a Sufi shrine, the Drug Squad have taken up residence in his kitchen, and some of his colleagues suspect him of going astray academically.
Philosophy Professor Harry Butler is obsessed with the mind/body problem, but his increasingly distracted air makes his colleagues at the university suspect him of going astray academically. His wife has converted to Sufism and turned his study into a shrine where she sits cross-legged and chants for hours on end. The Drug Squad has taken up residence in his kitchen so as to observe the movements of his neighbors and their visitors. Among these visitors, photographed by the Drug Squad, is one of Harry's oldest friends. And living in the house next door is a woman Harry may have had an encounter with in Singapore. The story takes place in Auckland, New Zealand. But who is the storyteller, why is he in Europe, why does he keep moving from city to city, and why does he seem to require the presence of a certain Uta Haverstrom in order to write? The Death of the Body, first published in 1991, combines an exceptional blend of wit, intelligence, and excitement.
