This collection consists of 12 of the latter 13 shows of the Sixth Series (from December 1955 to March 1956) together with bonus material (including The Goons Hit Wales, an insert in the 1956 St. Davids Day broadcast on the Light Programme and China Story, broadcast on the Home Service from the National Radio Show at Earls Court in August 1956), packaged on 7 CDs, accompanied by two booklets of useful information compiled by Andrew Pixley and four more postcards of Spikes original drawings.

Fans will be delighted to discover that there are five new releases (including the two specials) of Goon Show broadcasts that have never before appeared in the public domain. All of these episodes have been digitally remastered by Ted Kendall using the latest in noise-reduction technology.

Among the bonus items is an August 1956 edition of The Laughtermakers, one of a series of light-hearted inquiries about the comedy business this one featuring Harry Secombe. Also included is a ten minute recording of the audience warm-up from an unidentified recording session, which provides an excellent insight into the steam-driven atmosphere of recording night at The Goon Show. The script for the missing show, Tales of Old Dartmoor, is included as a PDF in the bonus items, though this is a typed transcript rather than Spikes original.

Overall, this is an excellent collection that guarantees over seven hours of listening enjoyment, despite the disappointment of the omission of Tales of Old Dartmoor.

Discover more about the Goons at www.thegoonshow.org.uk

Neil Trickey (Encyclopdia Goonicus) - Neil Trickey Write a review
