The first ever illustrated paperback of the critically acclaimed and beloved children's classic, featuring 26 colour paintings and over 30 pencil drawings by Alan Lee. Bilbo Baggins enjoys a quiet and contented life, with no desire to travel far from the comforts of home; then one day the wizard Gandalf and a band of dwarves arrive unexpectedly and enlist his services -- as a burglar -- on a dangerous expedition to raid the treasure-hoard of Smaug the dragon. Bilbo's life is never to be the same again. The Hobbit became an instant success when it was first published in 1937, and more than 60 years later Tolkien's epic tale of elves, dwarves, trolls, goblins, myth, magic and adventure, with its reluctant hero Bilbo Baggins, has lost none of its appeal. This classic edition is now available in a smart new livery, and is illustrated by Alan Lee throughout to complement the new paperback of The Children of Hurin.

'The Hobbit belongs to a very small class of books which have nothing in common save that each admits us to a world of its own. Its place is with Alice and The Wind in the Willows.' Times Literary Supplement 'One of the best loved characters in English fiction! a marvellous fantasy adventure' Daily Mail 'Finely written saga of dwarves and elves, fearsome goblins and trolls! an exciting epic of travel, magical adventure, working up to a devastating climax' The Observer A BOOK THAT I BOUGHT MANY YEARS AGO AND OFTEN STILL READ. I FIND THAT IT HAS BEEN WELL WRITTEN AND IS A BOOK NOT JUST FOR CHILDREN BUT FOR ADULTS TOO. IT IS A STORY THAT CAN TAKE YOU INTO THE REALMS OF FANTASY SO EASILY AND KEEP YOU THERE. BILBO, AT FIRST, REMINDS ME OF ME - SAFE IN THE COMFORT OF MY OWN ENVIRONMENT, BUT LOOKING FOR SOME THING ELSE - JUST WISH I HAD THE 'GUTS' TO MOVE ON TO ADVENTURE LIKE HE DID, EVEN IF IT WAS PUSHED ONTO HIM. BILBO IS A CHARACTER TO BE ADMIRED. ADVENTURE IS WHAT MOST PEOPLE CRAVE, SO IT IS EASY TO IMMERSE YOURSELF INTO THE BOOK BELIEVING YOU ARE ONE OF THE 'GOOD GUYS'. THE BOOK ALSO HOLDS A CLOSE EFFINITY TO MY HEART, I HAD 6 WEEKS TO TEACH MY YOUNGEST CHILD TO READ AND WRITE IN ENGLISH - HE WAS 5 YEARS OLD AND WAS BEING TAUGHT THROUGHT THE MEDIUM OF WELSH AND WAS NOT GOING TO BE TAUGHT READING AND WRITING IN ENGLISH UNTIL THE NEXT YEAR - BEFORE WE MOVED TO WARRINGTON. LOOKING AT THE BOOKS ON THE SHELVES I NEED A BOOK THAT WOULD CAPTURE HIS HEART AND HIS ATTENTION, THE HOBBIT STOOD OUT. HE LOVED THE STORY AND MADE THOSE 6 WEEKS FLY BY, LEARNING COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MADE EASIER. - SADIE LEWIS Write a review
