Lord of the Rings is a reference point in my journey through life; reading it in my youth, revisiting it as a young adult and now, in the prime of life getting new insights and discovering additional nuances LOTR continues to satisfy. -
Ted MebergJ R R Tolkien's imagined universe is almost unrivalled in literature for the breadth of its vision combined with its lovingly realised detail. The 'deeper magic' of the book comes from its many resonances with Tolkien's Christian faith. -
Lorraine HunterOf all the books I've read, this is the one I would give a great deal to be able to read for the first time again. It is also possibly one of the most influential books ever written - it resonated with the 60s and 70s generations so strongly that there is a kind of Tolkieniana diaspora, with 'Rivendells' in the far corner of remote places, thousands of pale imitations lining the fantasy shelves of bookshops everywhere and some of the greatest rock bands of all time have recorded albums permeated with Tolkien references. For me it provided escape into a fantastic other world. I was desolate when I finished it! -
