THE ORIGINAL TEXT. 'Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a Mockingbird.' A lawyer's advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of this classic novel - a black man charged with attacking a white girl. Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores the irrationality of adult attitudes to race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s with both compassion and humour. She also creates one of the great heroes of literature in their father, Atticus, whose lone struggle for justice pricks the conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence and hypocrisy.

Itis beautifully written, completely engaging, and really pulls you in to the story. I recall reading this for the first time at school when i was 12, (a long tome ago!) and I loved it then and have ever since. It's relevance is timeless, I have just read it to my 12 year old son and he aenjoyed it very much, easily identifying some of the issues and it gave us much to talk about. I'm vnever without a copy! - Michelle EvansA timeless classic truly reflective of the era it was set in. Harper Lee wrote the most cutting edge controversial story possible, unashamedly condemning prejudice particularly in the context of racism. Backed up with the memorable black and white film, this book still has relevance today, and will carry you through every emotion possible from sheer despair to overwhelming joy, from relief to tragedy. The content is easy to read, yet it will get u really fired up and should unexpectedly challenge you. - Greg MessamThis is a beautifully written book which spoke to me as a mixed race girl of parents who never discussed racism and who sent me to rural, state schools where I was the only non white. I was 13 when I first read it; I have read it countless times since and still get caught up in the drama with such vivid scenes imprinted in my head that I feel as if I am part of that community though not always as the same character. - Lucy Garnett Read all reviews (5) Write a review
