Ulysses, one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century, has had a profound influence on modern fiction. In a series of episodes covering the course of a single day, 16 June 1904, the novel traces the movements of Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dedalus through the streets of Dublin. Each episode has its own literary style, and the epic journey of Odysseus is only one of many correspondencies that add layers of meaning to the text. Ulysses has been the subject of controversy since copies of the first English edition were burned by the New York Post Office Authorities. Today critical interest centres on the authority of the text, and this edition, complete with an invaluable Introduction, notes, and appendices, republishes for the first time, without interference, the original 1922 text.

The book has all of humanity, it is local to Dublin but at the same time is universal. Words become sounds, at times are solid and tangible. But at the end of the day it is great fun and truly Irish. -
Stephen CarrThis is probably the best book I have ever read. I read most of it whilst on a holiday to British Columbia, Canada, where it usually takes about 8 hours to get from one place to another, so I had lots of reading time. Ulysses has an incredible variety of different literary styles in one book and I think thats what impressed me most about it. Ulysses describes a day in the life of a man from Dublin, called Leopold Bloom. It is set in the early 20th Century and is loosely based on Homers Odyssey. It is written in the Stream of Consciousness style popular with modernists such as Joyce and Virginia Woolf, wherein they can describe a moment in several pages which is really interesting to me. This is partly how Joyce was able to describe a days events in 1000 pages. Ulysses is split up into 18 episodes, with each one being slightly different to the other; there is an episode which is written like a newspaper, with headlines followed by short articles. Another section is written like a scientific paper and another is written in a form of Old English. The final episode is a fifty page soliloquy of the main characters wife, Molly Bloom, with eight massive sentences and no other punctuation. This is a great book! I highly recommend it! -
