Soon more exploded bodies turn up - a corpulent academic, a spaced-out pizza delivery boy, and a veteran FBI agent - and Vinny or his wife Tina are present at each horrific scene. Who could be behind these vicious, high-tech murders, and more importantly, just what is the killer's motive? Edge-of-the-armchair writing and storytelling by a new genius in the genre.

As Captain Abe Redden's superior officer likes to remind him, "Warfare is emotionally upsetting to everyone." However, for Captain Redden, M.D., being an Army psychiatrist on garrison duty in West Germany during the early 1960s is just as taxing, and dangerous. First the teenage daughter of a fellow officer dies in the post hospital's emergency room the night Redden is on duty. And then a young lieutenant involved in highly classified electronic espionage seeks out Dr. Redden for help-only to disappear from his office. The convolutions and confrontations make for a very funny and very poignant story spiced with suspense and insight.

For fans of high-society mysteries, such as those by Marne Davis Kellogg, Jane Stanton Hitchcock, Kerry Greenwood, and Nancy Martin! "Private Resolver" Emma Rhodes is successful enough to live the life of luxury, which includes a residence in Vila do Mar, Portugal. Beautiful and intelligent, she is right at home among the British upper crust who flock to the lovely fishing village. And for once, work is the furthest thing from her mind. Au contraire. When an American minister dies of an apparent suicide, Emma offers her unorthodox services to the grieving parents who suspect foul play. They agree to her terms: two weeks and $20,000, payabale upon results. With her finger on the pulse of local gossip and politics it doesn't take Emma long to get a lead. But, much to her dismay, her list of suspects gets smaller and smaller the closer she comes to her own circle of very rich -- and sometimes very ruthless friends.

But New York City is where she grew up, and there are times when she thinks back to those days with her father. One day, as she is driving home from her rounds at the hospital in the nearby town, she hears a familiar sound coming from a barn. It is the hum of an out-of-date printing press, a brand her father used. On an impulse, Jo leaves her motorcycle in the road and walks down to the barn that houses the machine.
But the printer is hardly welcoming. While she is trying to talk to him, he catches his hand in the press, and Jo bursts into action. Although she removes the screws from the roller that is clamping the man's fingers and offers to drive him to the hospital, he refuses to go and insists that she treat him in his home.
The strange episode leads to Jo's calling daily to attend to the man's injury. She learns that he's living with his daughter - a grown woman who possesses the mind of a child - that they are from New York, and that his wife has mysteriously disappeared. The printer is roughly grateful for Jo's care, but he has much on his mind, and he will not leave his house. Jo begins to suspect that he is connected to a recent local murder.

One is of a dead baby in its cradle, and on the back Agnes has scrawled a terrible message. Worse, the other photograph is of Agnes in a pose captioned "What Mr. Newly Wed Really Wants." When Agnes doesn't show up at school the next day, her teacher takes the two photographs to the police. Murdoch, furious at the sexual exploitation of such a young girl, resolves to find the photographer - and to put him behind bars.
"Night's Child" is the fifth novel in Maureen Jennings's highly praised historical mystery series. Two of the stories have already been adapted for the small screen, in acclaimed movies aired by the Bravo network. Another four movies are in development - good news for Jennings's fast-growing number of avid fans.
"From the Trade Paperback edition."
