"Tau" is Philip Lamantia's mystical second collection of poems, originally slated for publication in 1955, but suppressed by the poet due to his evolving religious beliefs. "Journey to the End" contains the poems of the legendary John Hoffman (19281952), whose poems were read by Lamantia in 1955 at the 6 Gallery reading where Allen Ginsberg debuted "Howl."
Lamantia's closest friend, a character in Jack Kerouac's "Dharma Bums," and the inspiration for two lines of "Howl," Hoffman moved between San Francisco and New York before his death in Mexico at the age of twenty-four. S. Eliot and Walt Whitman. The characters who speak here tarnish the pure image of their Midwestern hamlet by holding forth from the grave with tales of illicit love affairs, betrayed confidences, political corruption, and miserable marriages. The first serious work of psychological naturalism, this artful indictment of small-town hypocrisy influenced Theodore Dreiser, William Faulkner, and other luminaries.

All the contributors are New Zealanders, and all of the more than 100 poems address the topic of sex--not love, just sex. The result is a collection that tackles sex from every angle, including the comic in Karl Stead's "The Clodian Songbook," the confessional in Rachel McAlpine's "A Frightened Poem about My Breasts," the metaphysical in James K. Baxter's "On the Death of Her Body," and the just plain horny in Vincent O'Sullivan's "Remembering Westmere."

Burpee published an anthology of 100 Canadian Sonnets. Poet and critic Zachariah Wells figured it was high time for an update on that dusty tome. In Jailbreaks, Wells has gathered 99 of his favourite sonnets written by Canadians, from the 19th Century to the present day. Jailbreaks does much to question the standard assumption that the best Canadian poetry is written in free verse, while showcasing the enormous versatility of the sonnet and of the poets who use it as a vessel for their thoughts and feelings. Jailbreaks just might change the way we think about Canadian poetry.

These poets are from every country in Europe, and many of them are published here for the first time in English and in the United States. Poetry translated from more than forty languages is represented, including French, German, Italian and Spanish, and more regional languages such as Basque, Irish Gaelic, and Sami. Nearly 200 translators - among them John Ashbery, Marilyn Hacker, Michael Hamburger, Siri Hustvedt, Paul Muldoon, Charles Simic, and Derek Walcott - have contributed English versions of more than 400 poems gathered here.
The range of styles in New European Poems is exhilarating - from the lyric intimacy of Portuguese poet Rosa Alice Branco to the profane prose poems of Romanian poet Radu Andriescu, from the surrealist bravado of Czech poet Sylva Fischerova to the survivor's cry of Russian poet Irina Ratushinskaya.
