It is precisely the enthusiasm of the investigator, waxing warm with the steady accumulation of material, that gives such an essay its appealing attractiveness. This personal element is not represented in this work, for what man in the prime vigor of life and activity thinks it necessary to make written notes of ideas that have become a part of his own being?
It is, at any rate, a satisfaction to be able to place at the disposal of Goethe scholars the material which Professor Pinger accumulated. He would doubtless have skilfully woven material and interpretation into a connected text, as in his earlier work on Goethe und das Publikum; but his death rendered necessary a different utilization of the material.
