The pioneering local historian Stanley Freese completed this survey of the watermills of Buckinghamshire in the 1930s, and it includes plentiful photographs from that time but it is only now published for the first time. The extant mills are all described together with such information as to their history as Freese could glean from documentary sources, and more often oral testimony.
