Publisher's Synopsis

Parts of the precinct that survived from Merton Abbey were used by the textile printing industry from the 18th century. In 1881 the William Morris Company bought the printing works and it became the main centre for the production of stained glass, weaving, printing and tapestry making. This guide book not only traces the life of Morris, his company and his links with the Merton site, but also presents the results of excavations carried out in 1992 on part of the Morris and Co.'s works.
